Competency Based Language Teaching ( CBLT)
CBLT is an application of the
principle of competency based education to language teaching, is an
educational; movement that focuses on the outcome or output of learning in the
development of language programs. CBLT is based on a function and international
perspective on the nature of language. It seeks language in relation to the
social context in which it used.
The goal of the teacher:
Teacher can be built around the
nation of communicative competence and seek to developed functional
communication skill in learners. These skills are generally describe in only the most general
term, however, rather than being linked to the performance of specific real
world.
The goal of the student:
Student can be adjective in that
they describe the students’ ability to apply basic and the other skill in
situation that are commonly encountered in everyday life.
According to Auerbach (1986) there are eight
characteristic features to distinguish the Competency-Based Language Teaching:
14
1.
It
focuses on society related issues. The goal is to teach the language in order
to prepare students for the diverse needs of the world.
2.
It
focuses on life skills to underline that language is still taught as a means of
communication in practical tasks.
3.
The
focus is on what students can do with language, as well as with certain
behaviours.
4.
The
skills taught in the programme should be separated into modules and or into
manageable parts, so that the teacher and the students can manage the content
and fulfil their objectives.
5.
The student
tests’ results are of public domain, known and shared by both the students and
the teacher. Therefore, students can see their mistakes, correct them and know
clearly what behaviours and skills are expected of them.
6.
Evaluation is continuous and permanent,
meaning that students are tested before the course to determine what skills
they lack, and are tested again after receiving instructions to check if they
have achieved the necessary skills or not.
7.
Mastery is demonstrated through the
achievement of objectives. The evaluation is based on the results obtained from
the specific behaviour of the students, rather than by traditional assessment.
8.
Individualised
and focused attention are given to each student, the instructions given by the
teacher are not based on time but on the progress that each student makes.
Therefore, the teacher needs to focus on each individual student in order to
help in those areas where skills are lacking.
The
characteristic of CBLT:
·
A focus
on successful functioning in society
·
A focus
on life skills
·
Task or
performance centered orientation
·
Modularized
instruction
·
Outcomes
that are made explicit a priori
·
Continuous
and ongoing assessment
·
Demonstrated
mastery of performance objectives
·
Individualized,
student centered instruction
The
advantages of CBLT :
·
The
learner can judge whether the competencies seem relevant and useful
·
The
competencies are specific and practical can be seen to relate to the learners
need and interest
·
The
student can generally communicate well, having learn all the basic structure of
the language
·
The
competencies can be mastered one at a time, so the learners can see what has
been learned and what still remains to be learned
·
The
student are motivated to mention and understand the word in the target language
because the teacher use some media to improve the skill or learner.
The
disadvantages of CBLT
The
learning and teaching process will be passive if the teachers do not motivate
their student to improve ability to apply basic and other skill in situations
that are commonly encountered in everyday life.
CONCLUSION
CBLT is
a method teaching about language as the subject to enable student to become
autonomous individuals capable of coping with the demands of the world,
